{nl} Sixth grade students at The June Buchanan School have been busy in their literature class! Under the instruction of Mrs. Judith Mullins, students have developed an interest in Native Americans. While studying the autobiography genre, students read an excerpt from The Land of Red Apples. This autobiography was written by Zitkala-Sa, a Native American Sioux, and tells of his experiences being sent away from his homeland to attend boarding school. The story stirred the interest of students, and many of them wanted to know more about Native American culture. As a result, each student chose a different tribe to research. As part of their reports, students created replicas of the types of dwellings their specific tribe would have built. In addition to using this information in their literature class, students will incorporate this research activity into their creative writing class.
