Alice Lloyd College Named Champions of Character Institution

{nl}Mr. Rob Haworth of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced that Alice Lloyd College has been named by the NAIA Character Integration Committee and the National Office as a NAIA Champions of Character Institution for 2008-2009.{nl}The NAIA Champions of Character program, which is unique to NAIA colleges, honors schools who create an environment in which every NAIA student athlete, coach, official, and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core tenets. These tenets are: Respect, Integrity, Responsibility, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship.{nl}To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes and coaches at Alice Lloyd were expected to exhibit certain qualities. They were observed on the demeanor in which they conducted themselves during sporting events. They also were encouraged to participate in community service projects. In each of these areas, they far exceeded the requirements. Some examples of their servitude include the following: {nl}# Members of cheerleading squad participated in Dr. Seuss Reading Day at McDowell Elementary.{nl}# Members of various squads helped in the distribution of Christmas gifts to grade school children.{nl}# Members of the baseball team assisted with a two day Rural Medical Area (RAM) health care program that helped 720 patients receive medical care they would not have been able to afford.{nl}# Basketball players presented a sportsmanship program at Hindman Elementary where they stressed the importance of both education and conducting oneself the correct way both on and off the court.{nl}ALC Dean of Students, Scott Cornett, commented, “We are once again excited to have received a certificate in recognition of this prestigious honor. Our school has been fortunate enough to have been a named a recipient of this award each year since its inception. I do not know the exact number of colleges that have done that, but I believe that this is not something that many schools can say.” {nl}Director of Athletics, Gary D. Stepp, added,” It is a reflection on our coaches and our athletes that we have been able to win this award. It demonstrates the level of commitment our school has toward producing quality student athletes who are positive role models. We take pride in receiving this award, and hope to repeat it next season.”
