{nl} Congratulations to Dru Walters of Hindman, Kentucky for being named one of three recipients of the Tony Turner Scholarship. Dru, a senior at The June Buchanan School, was selected from a field of the top 26 seniors throughout eastern Kentucky to receive this $1,500 scholarship.This prestigious scholarship was created in the fall of 2002 by WYMT-TV in memory of the station’s beloved station manager and 6 o’clock news anchor, Tony Turner. Tony lost his life at the age of 40 on June 30th, 2002 after suffering insurmountable injuries in an automobile accident on June 10th. Through the Tony Turner Memorial Scholarship, Tony continues to inspire and touch lives of young people interested in a career in journalism and communications.Dru plans to attend Western Kentucky University next fall, where he will major in broadcast journalism. His love of broadcasting has only been strengthened by his involvement with The June Buchanan School Speech team. Having been a member of the Speech team since 4th grade, Dru has earned numerous awards for his excellence in public speaking. Additionally, this year Dru was awarded the Ralph Gabbard Memorial Broadcast Scholarship, which recognizes students that have the desire to pursue a career in broadcasting.We know that Dru will be phenomenal in his future broadcasting endeavors, and we congratulate him on his successes thus far!
